Die Handlung war bis zum Schluss so nervenaufreibend und konnte mich mit der ersten Seite packen.

I found it to be super slow, boring at times, too long and a chore to read. Trying to keep up with all of the characters just added to my confusion.

It could have used some editing it didn't need to be pages to tell this story , but I ended up really liking it.

I'll definitely read more of her books in the future. Thank you to Netgalley for a copy in exchange for a review. May 19, Amy Bruno rated it really liked it Shelves: on-my-kindle , contemporary , mystery , read-in I've been wanting to read Lucinda Riley for a while now after seeing my blogger friends praise her Seven Sisters series, and I am so glad that I took the plunge.

Lucinda is magician with words! Joanna is a journalist with a demanding job and fresh out of a failed relationship when she is assigned to cover the funeral for a famous actor.

While at the funeral she meets an elderly woman who sends her a letter which begins a series of events that could absolutely ruin the Royal family.

Joanna's inves I've been wanting to read Lucinda Riley for a while now after seeing my blogger friends praise her Seven Sisters series, and I am so glad that I took the plunge.

Joanna's investigating is fraught with danger as she gets closer to finding the truth. A secret that the Royal family will do anything to hide.

It's almost pages but I was so invested that the pages flew by! It's a great feat for an author to keep the suspense going for that long.

I was totally surprised at the end and never figured out the mystery. I was like this for most of the book I highly recommend The Royal Secret!

It had a fabulous plot line, wonderful characters, and the writing is phenomenal. I will definitely be picking up Riley's Seven Sisters series soon!

A proper tome of a thriller that was highly engaging from start to finish, peppered with brilliantly formed characters and a highly intriguing central theme.

I read with interest how this book was due to arrive years ago but didn't A love letter, a scandal, money and family form the heart of this and whilst it was very different to this author's recent novels I definitely think she should write more like this!

Beautifully plotted and gorgeous writing. Reco A proper tome of a thriller that was highly engaging from start to finish, peppered with brilliantly formed characters and a highly intriguing central theme.

So the unravelling of events begins with the French resident making the fateful decision to return to England for the memorial service.

Lucinda Riley has done it again, another fabulous creative thriller, a story of intrigue, suspense and murder courtesy of MI5 agents and with Royal implications.

The author acknowledg France a newspaper front page, reporting the death of an aged famous English actor, Sir James Harrison is being read by another aged person with past connections to the actor.

The author acknowledges that this book does have some parallels to events around the life of Princess Diana, however this was not the intention.

Taking all things into account regarding Royalty, British Kings have been prolific womanisers from way back when, then there are similarities to Princess Margaret and her love for Peter Townsend.

Along with all of this she finds herself assisting an aged French lady back to her London flat after a bad turn at the service triggered by her recognising a late arrival.

Simon, Civil Servant and long time family friend of Joanna unexpectedly turns up at her flat as she is continuing her meltdown, on leaving her flat he recognises a special number plate of a car parked nearby.

The author then moves the story to the Harrison family, Zoe is a star actor even with an unplanned pregnancy by an unnamed and secret man during her uni days, her brother is at this point the proverbial third generation failure, money and influence have not assisted him at all to be successful, detrimental personal habits have not helped.

At work, out of the blue Joanna receives an envelope with a cryptic letter from the aged French lady along with an old love letter and theatre programme enclosed.

Joanna is to visit her, but the letter is late in reaching her and when she turns up at the flat she is informed by a neighbour there that the French lady, Rose is dead.

On close inspection of the circumstances and chatting to the neighbour Joanna fully believes that she has been murdered.

The flat has been thoroughly cleaned and all personal effects removed, to where? From here on the intrigue starts. The reader may believe that some secrets are relative to the father of Zoe's son but this is a side story to the main event which has so many far reaching implications along with a promise made by a senior Civil Servant who is responsible for the crimes committed for which is revealed towards the end of the book.

The ending reveals a surprise but a bit ordinary compared to the whole adventure. View all 3 comments. I bought this book the day it was released.

Yet it took me agessss to finish. I have no idea why , it just felt that this was a bit slower than the authors other novels. I still cannot wait to ready anything written by Lucinda Riley but felt this plot was a little weak.

Slow and repetitive. The Royal Secret focuses on the scandalous lives of some of London's elite - lives filled with secrets, romance, espionage and mystery.

It was this premise, and the author's name I adored her earlier book, The Midnight Rose , that prompted me to request an advanced copy of this book.

But while the story promises a delightfully salacious royal scandal and long-held secrets, my feelings for the book are a little more complicated than I had anticipated.

The plot meanders through the lives of numero The Royal Secret focuses on the scandalous lives of some of London's elite - lives filled with secrets, romance, espionage and mystery.

The plot meanders through the lives of numerous characters that are weaved together in varying degrees of success and interest. Unfortunately, the narrative soon becomes convoluted with extraneous side plots which left me feeling like I never quite connected to the story or characters.

I strongly believe the book could have benefited with a hearty edit because it loses much of its impact due to its excessive length. The plot, that had its compelling moments, unfortunately concluded with story lines becoming more and more far-fetched, making this book fall into the 'just an okay read' pile for this reader.

In the end, this was a decent read with good intrigue that held my interest in varying degrees but, ultimately not as engaging as I had hoped.

Readers who enjoy a bigger tale with lots of characters and are willing to accept a neat and tidy ending, will probably enjoy this book more than I did.

Note: Author originally published this book in as The Love Letter. Disclaimer: My sincere thanks to Atria Books and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

May 26, Lynn Horton rated it it was ok. I freely admit that I bailed at the percent mark, even though the writing is clear and the manuscript obviously was written by a professional.

Except for the grandfather who dies early on, the characters are spoiled, entitled, and boring. Riley's The Seven Sisters series is a favorite of mine and I was curious to see how this stand-alone book would be.

And, the mystery and the events surrounding the mystery is gloriously entertaining to read about. I love mysteries that makes the characters in books dig deep to reveal truths from the past.

And, if I'm lucky the love stories that usually are a part of books like this will work out for me. Unfortunately, that's what made this story limp a bit.

I found myself not really caring about the romantic hookups. Partly, I think this lies in the fact that the character never really truly connected with me.

And, this is a massive book, the Kindle edition is pages. And, to feel, unconnected with characters in such a large book is a bit hard.

Thankfully the main story, the secret that James Harrison left behind is pretty amazing. If the story had focused more on that, rather than the romantic entanglement, not to mention all the cheesy moments especially the ending than the book would have been truly great.

So, would I recommend this book? Yes, I would. It sure is a thick book, but Lucinda Riley is a great author and if you're lucky you will find both the mystery and the romance great.

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review! The story somehow, someway destroyed her raising career years ago!

It was published before under the title Seeing Double, and for some reason it was pulled from markets! I just hope that this rewritten edition isn't removing the important bits from the original work.

I'm highly intrigued! Is [May 16, ] I just preordered a copy! Is lucinda a clairvoyant? It almost as if she foresaw the future! The story of Zoey and Arthur is so close to Meghan and Harry, as in a fourth or fifth to the throne prince falls for an actress!

It was good but got too boring in some places. The end is parted two ways, one way it's so sad the other way it's relieving. I get it now, I get why it was pulled from the markets.

It's sort of insulting to the Queen and her father. I might do a video about it. Seeing Double is more suitable. This was such an exciting read! There, she meets an elderly lady who indicates that she knows of a long held secret concerning James Harrison.

When Joanna receives a letter from her she begins to investigate, but the deeper she digs, the more danger she finds herself in.

Who can she trust and how far will people go to keep the secret hidden? I really became involved in the plot here, there was plen This was such an exciting read!

I really became involved in the plot here, there was plenty of intrigue and I enjoyed the way the story played out.

There were characters to root for and villains to jeer at. Yes, the plot is a little far-fetched at times, but it's fiction, so fun and definitely allowed.

A good piece of escapism. OMG I want the last week back. I found plot holes early on but were sure they would be explained.

How to take an interesting idea, likeable characters and then complet OMG I want the last week back. How to take an interesting idea, likeable characters and then completely stuff it up.

I wanted to throw the book across the room at the end. Absolute bloody hack! So yeah, am on the fence here. This is a huge read - pages so a great holiday read in theory In places I was so gripped but it became messy in parts and lost me.

This is the first Lucinda Riley book I've read, I got an advance reader copy in norwegian, and didn't expect much. BOY, if I only knew.

Most of the time I just couldn't put this book down, and it took me on the craziest emotional rollercoaster ride ever. I did NOT expect it to be thrilling at all!

How do I even start with explaining the story? Ok, so it's the end of , and a famous actor called Sir James Harrison dies.

Before he dies, we get a hint about a letter The next day, the ravens from the Tower of London are gone. This can't be good.

Journalist Joanna Haslam has to drag herself out of bed despite being sick to cover the funeral of the late actor. She sits next to a frail old lady, who suddenly seems to get an astma attack, and ends up helping her home.

Later the woman sends her a package that contains an old love letter, and it indicates that this could be something big - She has to get to the bottom of this.

This puts Joanna in great danger, but she is determined to find out the truth. It seems like she can't trust anyone.

Not even the handsome Marcus Harrison, grandson of the deceased film star. I think that's as far as I can go without spoiling it.

It kind of sounds dull the way I described it, but I promise you, this book is PACKED with characters that helps turn the story into something really extraordinary.

You will definitely be shocked many times throughout, and be happy, sad, angry and scared for the characters as you get to know them.

This is definitely no dull soggy love story for old ladies, like I initially thought. Lucinda Riley, I'm really impressed! I'm definitely jumping straight to reading the 7 Sisters series right away.

Fun fact about this book: It was launched first in Norway. It's a re-written version of Riley's then known as Edmonds novel Seeing Double, which was so controversial at the time that it ruined her career.

She didn't publish another book until , with her now married name Riley. And now she's back in the game!

As far as I know the book is only released in a couple of languages so far, but it will be available in english soon.

So I highly suggest you go to your favorite bookstore and pre-order it! Mar 22, Sheri rated it liked it Shelves: reviewed , goodreads-giveaway , historical-fiction , thriller-or-mystery.

Twists and turns. Wonderful storytelling. Numerous unreliable characters. Palace secrets and the scandalous lives of the rich and famous.

All in pages. If you're looking for a book to escape into, this is it. Thoroughly enjoyed this! An entertaining thriller about a scandal that threatens the establishment.

Although written during the s and is a product of its times, I enjoyed it all the more for that. I've rarely read pages so quickly.

The perfect holiday read. Review to follow shortly on For Winter Nights. I can understand why it wasn't released after the death of Princess Diana though and when the Royal family weren't exactly flavour of the month!

It was a twisty turny read with lots of intrigue and red herrings and characters not knowing what to do and finding things they didn't know what they were until later Characters were interesting but I admit I didn't know who to believe at t image: Visit the locations in the novel A mystery and plenty of intrigue in this novel.

Characters were interesting but I admit I didn't know who to believe at times Not sure. Would someone working for the foreign office do what a certain character did?

Not sure, but it was all very thrilling wondering what if! It seems a different kind of novel to the others as the author is in the middle of her Seven Sister series so this wasn't as back and forth as some of her other novels, but what it did contain was a good central mystery and the usual crisp writing Lucinda is known for.

Yup, really enjoyed this one. Glad it was finally published! Can I just add - the title - I think this should have been more mysterious.

It's not a story just about feelings or a relationship but so much more! Jul 08, Amy rated it liked it Shelves: fiction , mystery-thriller , london.

Well this was no scholarly work, but it was just plain fun! Set in the late 90"s in London, its a mystery thriller involving an aging actor and his descendants, the royal family, and a young journalist who gets the scoop of a lifetime, but becomes embroiled with all the players.

Deaths follow every clue, and the love relationships shift around like a merry go round. This would make a good TV movie or mini series. Lucinda Riley is a great author to follow - and recently I have been in love with h Well this was no scholarly work, but it was just plain fun!

Lucinda Riley is a great author to follow - and recently I have been in love with her Seven Sisters Series. This one was apparently released 20 years ago as "Seeing Double.

There are plenty of twists and turns, that emerge extremely slowly. Its not best seller worthy, just a fun read. Perfect for summer.

Lucinda Riley books are some of my favorites as she is always consistent. This is another really good book. The mystery will keep you turning page after page.
